The Louvre Museum decided in 2022 to refresh totally its Tactile Gallery. This new zone is now dedicated to sculpture : what medium are used ? what are the specific know-hows ? What are the tools ?
Tactile Studio fully participate to this refurbishment, taking care of several mediation tools and sculptures. Among these, our studio were asked to design and deliver three motion videos, fully accessible.
We have taken into account the diversity of audiences from the very early stages of the film design. Initially, it’s all about ergonomics: what are the right text sizes? what is the grasping area for people in wheelchairs? how do they initiate video sequences? Where can sign language video appear? “Storyboarding for all” can be sometimes complex…
The main idea revolves around creating a fictional dialogue between a master sculptor and his young apprentice. The latter, just out of school, plays the role of the naive one and, in a way, helps the visitor to navigate through the terms and techniques.
In terms of style, we wanted to embrace a certain classic elegance, if possible, timeless, without falling into academicism.
For ergonomic reasons, we chose not to use the touchscreen capabilities of the screen, which are a bit too distant for wheelchair users, but to instead relocate the video launching function to the physical support under the screen.
An animated call-to-action is presented in the last third of the screen.
Portrait mode display was preferred to more easily show descriptive subtitles and videos in French sign language.
Each type of audience can find, in the short movie, can find its own sensorial approach. For instance, the audio tracks works in itself and allows a blind people to have their own fiction. Some sign language can also be triggered, with an actor wearing a workshop coat, to keep the audience in the context.
Tactile Studio is extremely proud to have contributed for over 11 years alongside the team at the Louvre to the popular appreciation of this unique heritage.
